Overview

The Utility Specialist is an entry level position to learn how to operate and maintain utility equipment with the highest degree of reliability. Training will be provided to learn how to operate and monitor the building management system (BMS) and the distributed controls system (DCS) used for controlling and monitoring the utility equipment for the site. Also, training will be provided to be the first response person for the BMS / DCS alarms for utility equipment.

Essential Functions:

    Operate and monitor utility systems, including compresses gases, cooling towers, plant steam, chillers, HVAC, emergency generators
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance on the utility equipment
  • Respond to emergency conditions such as power outages and fire alarms
  • Operate and monitor the BMS and DCS; Respond to alarms related to utility equipment
  • Perform chemical testing of boiler feedwater, cooling tower water, and plant steam; Make adjustments to chemistry control as required to maintain pre-established parameters
  • Monitor and operate the site wastewater neutralization system
  • Willing to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays
  • Monitor and maintain compressed gas inventories
  • Adhere to all safety requirements and follow safe procedures, immediately notifying management when unsafe conditions or potential hazards exist; Attend all required safety training
  • Support cGMP standards as required

Required Skills/Education:

  • HS and 2+ years of working experience in a team or equivalent
  • Willingness to perform required training and testing
  • Ability to navigate through multiple computer programs.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose issues in a variety of equipment

Preferrred Skills/Education

  • HS and 1 year of utility ops experience or 2+ years industrial maintenance experience or equivalent

Physical Demands:

  • The position requires essential physical abilities, including but not limited to climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, as well as repetitive motions.
  • The individual in this role may be required to perform work categorized as either "heavy work" or "very heavy work." Heavy work involves exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Very heavy work entails exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, over 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The individual in this role may work nights, and weekends, or be on call (as necessary) as a regular part of this job

Environmental Conditions:

  • The individual in this position is subject to various environmental conditions both indoors and outdoors. This role may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions such as noise, extreme heat, proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical currents, and vibrations. Additionally, the worker may encounter atmospheric conditions, such as fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. The workspace may have constraints like close quarters, narrow aisles, or passageways. The worker may also be exposed to air and/or skin exposure to oils. When necessary, the individual in this role may be expected to wear a respirator.
