Overview

The Data Practice Area within the Social, Statistical & Environmental Sciences (SSES) business unit at RTI International has an opening for a Biomedical Engineer (BE). The position will exclusively work on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). NHANES involves in-person household interviews and health examinations conducted in a mobile health examination vehicle (MEC). The BE will assist with the inspections and acquisition of the MECs, advise and assist with the outfitting, maintenance, and safe working conditions of all MECs, and will oversee the quality control (QC) of all clinical equipment within the MECs. The BE will also provide training, assist in the development of clinical, quality control, and calibration protocols, and provide technical support. The BE will oversee a group of biomedical equipment specialists (BMES), who will drive MECs from location to location, and be tasked with setup, maintenance, and closeout of the MECs in the study locations. Examples of clinical examination activities in the MECs include blood pressure, anthropometrics, hearing, vision, spirometry, dental, osteoporosis, and specimen collection and processing. The BE role is expected to be a full-time position over the life of the project. The position will require frequent overnight travel in 2024 associated with the build and acceptance of MECs, and in 2025 forward associated with physical operations of the MECs during data collection. The BE will attend a 21-day initial project training in RTP, NC in January 2025, and refresher and annual trainings thereafter, and be supervised by the Director of Physical Operations.


Responsibilities

Specific Responsibilities for the Position Include, but not limited to:

  • Assist with the inspections and acquisition of all MECs
  • Advise and assist with the outfitting, maintenance, and operability of all MECs
  • Advise and assist (as needed) the repair, replacement/refurbishment, and reconfiguration of MECs over time
  • Assist in the development of maintenance, quality control and calibration procedures for the clinical equipment and for the MECs
  • Assist in the development of manuals and training materials
  • Develop checklists for maintenance, QC, and calibration activities.
  • Provide oversight of QA/QC of all clinical equipment including tracking and monitoring reports
  • Provide training of biomedical equipment specialists on setting up/calibration of all equipment in the MECs
  • Assist in the training of clinical staff on the use of the equipment in the MECs
  • Attend project training, complete RTI required courses and certification by end of training
  • Oversee the group of biomedical equipment specialists/drivers setting up each MEC upon arrival to stand locations, maintaining the physical operations of the MECs, and closing out the MECs at the end of each stand
  • Provide technical support for biomedical equipment specialists/drivers and clinical staff and for the clinical equipment
  • Contribute to project deliverables and reports
  • Communicate regularly with the project leadership team
  • Frequent overnight project travel across the United States at up to 35% of work time
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering (focus areas in bioinstrumentation or biomedical electronics is a plus) or in a relevant field with documented "on the job" biomedical engineer training. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement (Associates degree and 6 years of experience or High School diploma and 8 years of experience) or must have equivalent military training in biomedical/electrical equipment.
  • Minimum of 5 years of Biomedical Equipment experience.
  • Must possess knowledge of maintenance actions: technical inspections, repairs, and troubleshooting, calibration, and QA/QC
  • Experience working on medical equipment in a clinical environment
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a public trust security clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 Years of Biomedical Equipment Technician
  • Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) preferred
  • Certifications in at least one of the following is highly preferred:
    • FMCNA Biomedical Technician Technical Certification Program
    • Biomedical Industry Technical Certification
    • Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI)
    • Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET)

Additional Information:

While traveling for the project, this position includes paid lodging, per diem based on location, paid individual room, and a rental car.
