Position Summary
The Deputy Director for Research Operations reports to the Director of Strategic Research Operations and is part of the RENCl's Management Team (MT). In that role, this position works closely with the Director for Strategic Research Operations and RENCI managers, providing leadership and oversight to the RENCI internal research operations, internal programs and initiatives, developing processes, improving internal workflows, and developing business models for funding RENCI internal programs and creating funding opportunities for workforce development.

Additionally, this position serves in a co-PI or senior personnel role on special research projects that are led by RENCI research projects that are led by RENCI researchers, often involving multi-institutional collaborations.

This position oversees the operations of RENCI's research operations group consisting of 4 direct and 5 to 7 indirect reports. This position may also oversee the work of other temporary staff, including contractors, freelancers, and temporary employees, as needed.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Leadership Experience: Demonstrated leadership experience, particularly in managing matrixed teams and providing staff guidance. Strategic planning ability.

Planning: Proven ability to collaborate on and implement plans to enhance and manage research operations processes and resources.

Collaboration: Strong skills in promoting collaboration and fostering partnerships.

Budgeting and Financial Management: Proficiency in developing and managing research operation budget proposals and ensuring effective financial resource use.

Risk Management: Ability to identify risks and challenges, propose mitigation strategies, and implement effective solutions.

Program Management: Program oversight and guidance expertise to ensure efficient program implementation and alignment with organizational goals. Familiarity with federal funding agencies (e.g., NSF).

Project Management: Competency in managing and coordinating research projects to achieve efficiency and adhere to the budget and schedule.

Research Operations: Familiarity with research operations processes and knowledge to develop and implement compliance and standardization policies and procedures.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Experience promoting interdisciplinary research collaboration.

Proposal Development: Proposal development expertise, ability to guide the process through required stages, lead the team forming, and support the proposal development team as needed.

User-Centered Design: User-centered design principle and research program application experience

Diversifying Revenue Streams: Experience and knowledge of diversifying organizational revenue streams.

Monitoring and Evaluation: Proficiency in developing and implementing budget and expenditure monitoring processes.

Research Technology: A strong understanding of research operations in methods, tools, and technology advancements and integrations.

Innovation: A track record of embracing innovation and adapting to new research operations technology and methodologies.
